Lesser known small museums?

Jul 31

The tourist info was posted here:
http://london2011.drupal.org/page/plan-your-drupal-holiday
and that covers all of the big name sites. This isn't my first trip to London, I'd like to explore some smaller museums. I like house museums or smaller quirky museums.

The last time I was there my husband and I stumbled upon Sir John Soane's museum. It was so lovely! Jam packed of artwork, great collections and it's always great to see how people lived.

Has anyone similar recommendations?

Wellcome Collection and British Library

I would recommend a visit to the Wellcome Collection, and the British Library. They are both in the Kings Cross area. More information here:

http://www.wellcomecollection.org/ - currently a great exhibition about dirt!

http://www.bl.uk/sciencefiction/ - an exhibition for sci-fi fans

Bramah Tea and Coffee Museum

The pub crawl on Tuesday goes close to the Bramah Tea and Coffee Museum, which I can really recoomend:

http://www.teaandcoffeemuseum.co.uk/

Southbank is the site of the old "sufferance wharfs", where they opened new wharfs to relieve the traffic that was clogging up the city's custom houses. It's the ideal place for somewhere celebrating the tea and coffee trade into London. If you want more of these useless facts, you should join my leg of the pub crawl!

The website says it's "closed for refurbishment till 2009" - my guess is that's done now but they haven't updated their website. Maybe we should build them one in Drupal? :) Give them a ring beforehand to check if I were you.

Thank You

Thank you for all of this information.

My wife and I love museums.

In South London

I would recommand http://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/
A very fine museum the first collection commissioned by Stanislaus Augustus, King of Poland, to form from scratch a Royal Collection-cum-National Gallery.

Portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough
Raphael and Veronese, a portrait of a young man by Piero di Cosimo – one of the earliest in the Collection
Poussin and Claude etc....

Then you'll certainly also

Then you'll certainly also appreciate the Petrie museum, hidden in the UCL buildings. ( http://www.ucl.ac.uk/museums/petrie ) It's small, but finding it does feel like a huge discovery. (Make sure not to get lost in the UCL buildings.) Also check what's one: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/museums/whats-on/petrie_listings Sad they don't have a Horror Movie night scheduled during the Drupalcon. They are quite good.

Strangely, the tourist overview doesn't mention the Museum of London, and they also forgot the Ampitheatre at Guildhall ( http://www.guildhallartgallery.cityoflondon.gov.uk/GAG/AboutUs/AboutTheA... )

Dennis Severs' House

Dennis Severs' House, 18 Folgate Street is a Georgian terraced house in Spitalfields, London, England. From 1979 to 1999 it was lived in by Dennis Severs, who gradually recreated the rooms as a time capsule in the style of former centuries. It is now open to the public.

Sir John Soane's House

I'll recommend this one, which I visited about 5 years ago.

Sir John Soane's Museum

It's a large town-house off Lincoln's Inn Fields, formerly the residence of the architect Sir John Soane. It's stuffed to the gills with his personal collection of art and antiquities, and still has the feel of a home, with the old furniture still in place.

Besides the items on display, another remarkable feature is the interior of the house itself. He came up with an ingenious set of fixtures and fittings to accommodate his collection as it grew.

London's best unsung museums

It's very surprising to hear that someone managed to go to all major museums in London, there are so many!
Here are some interesting but not so touristy places:
The Wallace Collection is a national museum in an historic London town house. Free admission. http://www.wallacecollection.org
Fashion And Textile Museum is a great choice for design and fashion lovers. http://www.timeout.com/london/venue/8983/fashion-and-textile-museum
Fan Museum - the world's only museum dedicated to fans. http://www.timeout.com/london/museums-attractions/event/63940/fan-museum
Spencer House - is a private palace http://www.timeout.com/london/venue/9042/spencer-house
Geffrye Museum http://www.timeout.com/london/museums-attractions/event/63946/geffrye-mu...
free admission. A stylish place with a garden in Shoreditch.

A few of mine...

There's the toy museum in Bethnal Green

http://www.vam.ac.uk/moc/

Not to everyone's taste but I like http://www.geffrye-museum.org.uk/ in Shoreditch

Been to the V&A?

And not a museum but I am a big fan of http://www.serpentinegallery.org/

Depending on when you came last I like the Tate Modern, impressive building and always new stuff there.

Of course if you want a day out then there's always sunny Brighton where I live, 50 mins from central London, 35 from Croydon.
