Curry night on Tuesday night (23rd August)

Jul 7

Quite a few of us in the UK Drupal community love curry, and since we're all getting together for DrupalCon, what better social event to have than a curry night?

Latest update, Wednesday 24th August

There was a massive turnout for curry (50+), and hopefully everyone had a great meal, and got to catch up with a whole load of Drupal people!

Unfortunately, we were £85 short on the bill, and I was left with a situation, so I had to personally cover this amount. If you came to the curry and you can help to put things right by giving me £5 on PayPal, please get in touch via the drupal.org contact form. Sorry to have to ask. It was always going to be tricky to get the bill right with over 50 people!

Latest update, Monday 22nd August:

By my reckoning there are 45-50 people who definitely want to come to the curry night! While that's awesome, Cafe Spice Namaste is going to have issues handling this many people!

Here's the current situation:

The table is booked for 35 people, as this is the most they can handle. There is a strong possibility that we will fit more people than that in the restaurant. It is Tuesday night, which is usually a quiet night for eating out.

If there are too many people to fit, I will get everyone to split into two groups, and the second group will head to the Lahore Kebab House on Umberston Street, which is about 10 minutes on foot. There is no booking, but again, I doubt it will be busy. If by any stroke of bad luck, there is no room, there are plenty of other curry houses very close by, so whoever leads that group will make sure you don't miss out!

Please note that since we arranged this, the Great DrupalCon London Pub Crawl has been announced! We want people to have the best possible time at DrupalCon and there just isn't enough time to fit in all the various events without clashes, so unfortunately the curry clashes with the pub crawl.

The good news is there's plenty of time to join up with the pub crawl after the curry, so you won't miss out entirely, and quite a few of us will be going from the curry house to the pub crawl.

Alternatively, if you want to do the whole pub crawl, and you've already said you're a definite for the curry, it's no problem to back out of the curry, but do let us know in the comments below so we can amend the booking.

Please note, the plan has changed and no longer features Vibe Bar! Don't head there by mistake!

So, Tuesday 23rd August is the (unofficial) DrupalCon curry night! This is open to anyone who would like to attend, not just people from the UK or any particular group.

The original plan was to go for curry on the famous Brick Lane, but all the recommendations were for places that weren't on Brick Lane! So we're going nearby, but it's no longer actually ON Brick Lane.

Here's the plan:
* Meet at 19:30 in The Princess of Prussia (pub), Prescot Street (http://ow.ly/5XFsV)
* Table at 20:00 at Cafe Spice Namaste right next door!
* Drinks and fun to follow.

To get to Prescot Street from East Croydon rail, take a train to Victoria (about 20 minutes), then switch to the District Line tube and this will take you to Aldgate East (about 15 minutes). Out of Aldgate East, find Colchester Street (it will be to your left, ahead, on the other side of the road), and walk along it. Prescot Street will be on your right after a 5-minute walk. Total journey time is about 45 minutes or so from East Croydon rail.

Booking is going to be essential for this event. If you can DEFINITELY attend, please say so in the comments so we can book for the right amount of people (or thereabouts). If you're thinking about it, please wait until you're sure.

If there are a LOT of people, we will look to book more than one curry house. Don't worry if you're not sure about coming right up until the day, as if you come to the pub beforehand and you couldn't get in on the booking, we'll have a second group try to get a table (Tuesday night shouldn't be busy) or go to another curry house so nobody misses out. Here's to curry and Drupal! The perfect match!

Travel together from Fairfield

The meeting point is in London but I'll be travelling directly from Fairfield so if you want to travel with someone who's familiar with navigating London's transport, join me just after 6pm in the foyer near the registration desk. I'll be wearing black shorts and a white hooded top! You could also meet us in the entrance area of East Croydon train station some time after 6.20pm. Or tweet me on @martin_q

The Amazee Labs team would love to join. +6 people for Curry night. Thanks for organising!

Curry, yummy.

What a good idea.

Ticket not necessary

No worries, no DrupalCon ticket is needed to eat curry!

I'll come (update: I won't)

Count me in... then I'll hit the pub crawl, perhaps.

Update: Too much curry last night, so I've lost the hunger for more for at least another day. I'll see you guys on the pub crawl. :-)

I'm interested in this too. Also, Brick lane is a good place to go for a few drinks later. The Old Truman Brewery area at the top of Brick Lane has some cool bars.

Great response

Wow, great response so far! The booking is for 25 people (in a special function room, I am told!) but if a whole load more people want to come, I can talk to the restaurant about what we can do. There's always the option to split into two groups and use two different restaurants if they can't fit us all in, so whatever happens, we have options.

Here's a link to the restaurant so you can pick your meal / start drooling: http://cafespice.co.uk/

definetely

Mirch Massala, The Lahore

Mirch Massala, The Lahore Kebab House, Tayyabs, and Cafe Spice Namaste are recommended in that area but all outside Brick Lane in Whitechapel and about 10 mins walk from The Vibe Bar. Staying closer to Brick Lane, the places on the side streets tend to be the best (although more home style cooking i.e. very hot).

(If anyone is hunting curries more generally while they are in London, Tooting in South London has some great places.)

alternative transport route

There is another way of getting to Brick Lane from Croydon:
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en&ses...
Direct overground train to Shoreditch Station from West Croydon Overground Station. It takes 35 minutes. Than you have to walk up Bethnal Green Road towards the junction with Brick Lane for 5 minutes. Vibe Bar is much nearer Bethnal Green end of Brick Lane than Aldgate end.
